2017 Susanna Van Zyl, RN BSN CMSRN

Susanna Van Zyl, was born in South Africa. She attended the University of Orange Free State and received a bachelor’s in nursing in 1989. Upon graduation, she worked as a post-partum charge nurse at Tygerberg Hospital in Bellville, South Africa.

Her specialties include general, psychiatric, and community nursing and midwifery. In 1997, she received a critical nursing diploma and in 2014, certification as a medical-surgical registered nurse. As her work experience expanded in South Africa, she worked in intensive care, labor and delivery, surgery and critical care before moving to the United States in 2000. She continued her critical care background in Sacramento, California and later in Phoenix, Arizona at a National Healthcare Group.

Her recent specialties include behavior health and pulmonary care. Current certifications include CMSRN and working toward her LNCC.

Susanna lives in Glendale with her husband, Werner, and their two sons.

2016 Roxane Tompkins, RN


Roxane Tompkins is a member of the Cancer Treatment Center of America – Western Regional Medical Center team as a clinical audit specialist.  Responsibilities include internal auditing, medical chart review, and analyzing compliance practice issues. 

She has been an active registered nurse in Arizona since 1979.  Additional credentials and certification obtained include Legal Nurse Consultant Certification (LNCC), Certification in Healthcare Compliance (CHC), and Certification in Clinical Documentation Integrity (C-CDI).  She is a member of the Healthcare Compliance Association (HCCA) and participates annually in HCCA Southwest Regional and National Conferences. 

Roxane began her nursing career at Maricopa Medical Center working in obstetrics and general surgery.  Many opportunities arose while employed at Saint Joseph Hospital and Medical Center.  During that time she honed her skills in the areas of obstetrics, clinic setting, and case management.  She has also participated as a clinical adjunct faculty member with Maricopa Community College in pediatrics and obstetrics.  Legal nursing consulting experience includes working in a defense firm and as an independent consultant.  

2013-2015 Patricia G. Carroll, RN, BSN, LNC, CAISS



Pat Carroll is a Registered Nurse and a Legal Nurse Consultant in Exponent’s Biomechanics practice. She is responsible for organizing and reviewing medical records and other relevant healthcare and legal documents to assess issues of causation and physical damages, and then formulating a summarized chronology of the analyzed information. She researches pertinent health care literature, standards, and guidelines and consults with engineers to provide education of the medical and healthcare related issues. Ms. Carroll has reviewed hundreds of medical records and provided medical chronologies, injury diagrams (for client education and trial exhibits) and Abbreviated Injury Scaling for numerous plaintiffs and defendants. She has provided medical record review for all types of injury cases, as well as medical device implant failure and toxic exposure cases. She served as Director at Large and Membership Chair to the Phoenix Chapter for 3 years.
